Digital Radiography

Our practice utilizes one of the newest digital imaging systems available on the market. With digital radiography we are able to obtain an image of the radiographed area in less than 6 seconds.  The image appears immediately on the computer screen so there is no waiting for processing film, and if the image is unacceptable, the radiograph can be retaken immediately. This can save valuable time in beginning treatment on your horse.

Like any radiography system, digital radiography primarily focuses on bone.  However, digital images show such great detail that some soft tissue disorders can be diagnosed with this system.  This digital technology allows the image to be manipulated, enlarged, and enhanced to diagnose problems that cannot be seen with standard film. Because these images are truly digital, they can be quickly emailed to anyone around the world, or burned to a CD for your record keeping.

Digital Ultrasonography

The other digital imaging system that our practice utilizes is digital ultrasound. The ultrasound can function in the diagnosis of many problems in multiple areas of the body. Tendons and ligaments can be thoroughly evaluated for injuries ranging from inflammation and enlargement to core lesions. Joint and joint structures can also be evaluated.

The healing process of these injuries can be evaluated as well. Ultrasound is also vital in reproduction, being used to assess accurate follicle size, and pregnancy verification and viability. With digital ultrasound the image can be saved, emailed, or burned to a CD.

P3 Therapy

P3 Therapy is an alternative therapy that functions to restore electrical charge to cells, increase blood flow to the targeted area, and somewhat of a deep tissue massage.  It’s most common use is for back soreness.  However, it can be used on tendon and ligament injuries, sore joints and arthritis, cellulitis and other types of swelling, and has shown some positive impact on acute laminitis.

As mentioned, the most common use is on sore backs and other muscle groups.  Treatment for muscle soreness usually consist of 3-5 days daily treatment, with treatment sessions lasting 10-20 minutes, however, treatment must be tailored individually to each horse.

Blood Analysis

Fast and accurate blood analysis is important in tailoring specific treatment to your horse in a timely manner.  In less than 15 minutes complete blood count and serum chemistry panel results are available in-house, 7 days a week.  Our practice also utilizes several other excellent referral labs for other types of diagnostics blood work, cultures, and biopsies.

Preventative Medicine

Our practice believes that prevention is the best form of medicine, and therefore offer complete preventative care services.  We encourage owners to have every horse examined at least once annually.  At this time we will work closely with the owner to determine the most appropriate vaccines for their horses, consult on nutrition, and determine what, if any, annual testing needs to be done.

We will also work closely with owners to determine a proper deworming protocol.  As many owners are aware, rotational deworming, based on a monthly schedule, is being replaced with fecal egg counts, due to the resistance that is developing to the dewormers that are currently available to horses.  Our practice encourages fecal egg counts so that each horse can be properly treated based on their individual parasite burden, or lack thereof. We will work with each individual client to develop a protocol that is best suited for their horse's needs.

The yearly exam is also an excellent time to do an oral exam on each horse.  As more and more owners are becoming aware, it is important to start routine dental care on horses at a young age, not waiting until they are old and their teeth are in a poor condition.  Our practice utilizes power dental equipment and proper sedation to be sure that all parts of the dental arcade can be reached and floated properly.  We also work very closely with several of the best equine dentist in the country, and their skill is sought on both a consultation and referral basis.
